Survey Confirms What Most Benicians Already Know…

Benicia has long been a place where people don’t like to leave. Unlike many Bay Area communities, where people stay only until they can afford to move to a town they like better, most of those who move to Benicia end up becoming so enamored with our town that when the time comes to move they never look beyond the city limits.

In other words, those who live here, tend to like Benicia VERY much, a fact that was confirmed in a recent survey conducted by the National Research Center. Their findings confirmed what those of use who live here have known all along — the grass definitely ISN’T greener on the other side.

According to a recent article in the Vallejo Times-Herald, the recently released 2008 National Citizen Survey found that 95 percent of those Benicians surveyed rated the quality of life in Benicia as good or excellent, with most saying they plan on staying here for the next five years.

Benicia was one of 500 cities nationwide to participate in the survey. All told, about 400 random Benicians were asked their opinions about community life and city services. The interviews took place this past September. Benicia got high marks in its overall image, appearance, cleanliness and sense of community.

And almost all of those surveyed confirmed that they have no intention of leaving Benicia anytime soon. The survey didn’t pinpoint exactly what it is that causes so many Benicians to set deep roots very soon after they arrive.

Perhaps its Benicia’s small town atmosphere. Or the low crime rate. Perhaps its our waterfront proximity. Or the many historic sites or cultural amenities. Perhaps its the cohesive, inclusionary social and political atmosphere, where people feel they can make a difference and that their opinions and voices really matter.

Perhaps its the climate.  Or the convenient geographic proximity to the heart of the Bay Area, Sacramento and the wine country. Perhaps its having a real, thriving downtown. Or being able to drive from one side of town to the other in less than 10 minutes and with a minimal amount of traffic. Perhaps its having BART, the Baylink Ferry, two bridges and two major interstates within 10 miles of here. Or maybe it’s having great schools, parks and youth athletic programs.

More than likely, though, it’s a combination of all of the above — and of living alongside others who relish these things just as much as you do.

Benicia didn’t really need a survey to tell us how much people like it here. It’s something that those of us who live here have known for a long, long time.
