Another Sign Of The Times: Cost Plus World Market Closing Its Vallejo Store
January 13th, 2009 categories: The Economy, Vallejo
I stopped by Cost Plus in Vallejo this evening to pick up a few things and was surprised to find large Entire Inventory On Sale signs plastered all over the front windows of the Gateway Plaza store.
I wasn’t sure whether it was just first-of-the-year inventory time or the beginning of the end for yet another Vallejo retailer. I hadn’t heard news of Cost Plus closing any stores, so when I got home a few hours ago, I decided to check out several local news web sites to see if I had missed something.
I found no mention of it on the Vallejo Times-Herald web site nor on several others so I figured it was just inventory-reduction time. But just to be sure, I decided to check Cost Plus’ corporate web site, which alas confirmed my suspicions: Cost Plus indeed had indeed just announced that it would be closing 26 under-performing stores, including the Vallejo store. (1-13-08 AM Update — an article appeared in the Times-Herald this morning).
The Vallejo store is one of only two in California that the Oakland-based import retailer is closing, and the only one in Northern California. It comes on the heels of the late 2008 closure of Linens ‘N Things, which was located just two doors down from Cost Plus. It’s yet another sign that the country’s economic woes have spread far beyond the housing sector.
The news release doesn’t indicate how soon the Vallejo store will close, but when it does, this once thriving section of the Gateway Plaza shopping center (Vallejo’s largest) will turn into somewhat of a ghost town, with Michaels and Old Navy the only remaining anchor tenants in this huge 110,000 sq. ft. retail building. Cost Plus currently occupies 17,450 sq. ft., according to leasing agent Centro Properties’ web site.
Unlike Linens ‘N Things, which was in bankruptcy and closed all of its stores nationwide, Cost Plus is only closing 26 of its 296 stores. After the Vallejo store closes, the two nearest Cost Plus retail stores will be in Fairfield and Concord.
It sure was convenient having a Cost Plus store here for all these years, especially if you were looking for some hard to find spice or international food item. Plus, they’ve always carried a good selection of very drinkable value-priced wines.
