2009 Benicia’s Farmer’s Market Debuts
May 1st, 2009 categories: Benicia, Local Stuff
Two things tell you that spring is in the air: baseball and the Benicia Farmer’s Market.
And just like that first baseball game of the season, the first Farmer’s Market of the season usually carries with it an extra-special feeling.
Seeing your favorite farmers again is like renewing acquaintances with a long lost friend. Chants of “super-sweet” or “try one” remind you that summer is not far away. The first market of the season always seems to feature a few new farms or vendors. Among the newcomers I noticed on opening day were an organ grinder (sorry, no monkey) and a mobile version of Fuddruckers restaurant.
A former real estate colleague of mine, Craig Redden, is a manager for the popular hamburger chain. He was out there yesterday greeting visitors and offering a variety of different types of gourmet burgers. Craig says that Fuddruckers-On-Wheels will be at the Farmer’s Market every Thursday throughout the ‘09 season.
But the real stars of yesterday’s show were the farm-fresh fruits and vegetables. I came home with a 3-pack of strawberries along with some oranges, fuji apples, ripe hot-house tomatoes, spring onions and softball-sized red onions.

The pony rides weren’t there yesterday. But the always-popular bouncy-house was in its usual spot on the First Street Green. And an assortment of classic tractors was also on display for the little ones to hop up on and play farmer.
All in all, a great kickoff to the 2009 season. The Farmer’s Market is put on by Benicia’s Main Street program and runs from 4 pm to 8 pm every Thursday on the lower end of First Street.
