Vallejo’s City Park Playground: DAY FIVE Is Here — The Finish Line Is Within Sight
May 3rd, 2009 categories: Local Stuff, Vallejo
The one-of-a-kind volunteer-built playground at Vallejo’s City Park neared completion this afternoon, just five short days after construction began.
It’s hard to believe that this marvelous gift to the children of Vallejo was just a pile of lumber last Wednesday.
Yesterday, the assemblage of wood and plastic had finally started to look like a playground. Well today, when I snapped some photos and took a few videos around 4:30 pm, only the finishing touches were lacking.
Designed by renowned playground architect Robert Leathers and built from the ground up by an army of volunteers in just five days, the whimsical, fantasy-like playground was now almost reality.
The slides and swings were all in place. The tree fort was almost done. So were the nearby ship and rock wall. Workers were still busy hammering, sawing, drilling, painting and adjusting hardware fittings. But the end was clearly in sight.
I remember when we built our Robert Leathers-designed playground in Benicia’s City Park back in 1992 (incidentally it was the exact same 5-day period: April 29-May 3). Midway through the construction period it seemed that we’d never finish in five days. But we did.
And Vallejo’s volunteer crew faced a challenge we didn’t have to contend with: rain. As I recall, the weather back in ‘92 was sunny and warm, so we didn’t have to deal with tarps, mud, and rain gear.

Yet, despite Mother Nature’s curveball, Vallejo’s playground came in right on schedule. Some last minute fine tuning will no doubt be needed before the park is inspected and deemed ready for the youngsters to christen the new playground.
I’m sure that those who participated came away with memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. I still remember our Benicia playground construction as if it was yesterday.
I’ll stop by again in the coming days to snap some photos and take a video of the finished playground. So be sure to check back over the next few days.
