A Mad-Dash Land-Rush For Benicia Real Estate Earlier Today
July 3rd, 2009 categories: Benicia, Local Stuff
Talk about land rushes. It happened earlier today, right here in little old Benicia. People were out at the crack of down trying to stake their claim on their precious piece of real estate.
Okay, maybe I’m embellishing things a little bit. You see, the land rush I’m talking about took place in anticipation of tonight’s 3rd of July Torchlight Parade.
And the real estate people were “claiming” consisted either of a piece of lawn at the City Park adjacent to the judge’s stand or a small piece of sidewalk along First Street — both prime viewing areas for the always popular parade.
I got downtown about 6:45 am and the City Park lawn was already about half covered by various blankets. From the skies above, it probably looked like the world’s biggest patchwork quilt.
As I walked up First Street to take some photos and the video that I posted, I noticed that at least half of the curbside frontage along First Street already had chairs strategically placed so that their owners could have front-row seats.
Every year it seems that people start placing their blankets and chairs in position for the parade earlier and earlier. It wasn’t too many years ago that you could show up around 3:00 or 4:00 pm and still find a patch of green at the City Park.
This year, by 9 am, most of the prime lawn area adjacent to the gazebo was entirely covered with blankets. And by 12 noon, if you were looking for a place along First Street to place your folding chairs, you were probably out of luck.
In a few hours, I’ll join my Coldwell Banker colleagues to start practicing for our Kazoo Band entry in tonight’s parade. This is the first time in quite a few years that I’ve joined the parade. I don’t promise any grace or rhythm. But hopefully I’ll keep up with the rest of our group and at least not embarrass myself!
