Benicia’s annual Peddler’s Fair, which some call the Granddaddy of all Peddler’s Fairs, takes place tomorrow (Aug. 8th) on First Street.

The fair features 300 vendors, who will be selling an assortment of antiques, collectibles, hand-made items, food, and even a little music and entertainment. First Street is closed to vehicular traffic beginning at First and J.

Tomorrow’s Peddler’s Fair opens at 8 am and runs until 5 pm. However the set-up begins in the wee hours of the morning. All parked vehicles must be off First Street by 1 a.m. , as vendors can begin setting up as early as 2 a.m.

The fair, began inauspiciously back in 1963 when a few antique stores crowdgot together and displayed some of their wares on a few scattered tables in the courtyard out of in front of St. Paul’s Church at First and J Streets.

Back then no one could have predicted that it would grow into a huge street fair that annually draws 20,000-plus visitors to our quiet waterfront town.

As you might expect, downtown parking is always at a premium the day of the Peddler’s Fair. Off-site parking will be available at the high school and a shuttle bus will run about every 15-20 minutes. The shuttle will stop at the following locations:

  • Benicia High School
  • Hastings Dr. & Southampton Rd.
  • Benicia Middle School
  • Southampton Shopping Center
  • Lori Dr. & West 7th St.

Also, just so you know, dogs are not allowed at the fair, so if you’re coming, be sure to leave Fido home.
