Small Town Benicia Will Shine Friday Night

IMG_0027If you ever wanted to capture the essence of what small town living is like in Benicia, just wander downtown this Friday night.

That’s when the whole town will literally descend on First Street for the town’s annual Holiday Open House.

And if this year’s event is anything like those from years’ past, there will be holiday carolers, street musicians, wine tasting, an antique fire truck decked out in holiday lights and perhaps even horse and wagon rides.

And you won’t go away hungry or thirsty either, since most of the merchants serve up complimentary refreshments — everything from cookies and candy canes to hot apple cider and freshly popped popcorn.

When I said the entire town turns out for this event, I wasn’t kidding. For that night you can hardly walk 10-20 feet without running into a neighbor, friend or familiar face. It’s almost like stepping into a Dickens novel. The only things missing are snowflakes and Tiny Tim.

Our office at 900 First St. always seems to be a popular spot for passers-by, thanks to our popcorn wagons which keep churning out bags of free buttery popcorn all night long. Plus, rumor has it that Santa Claus will be there again this year, too.

So if you live in Benicia or have thought about moving here and want to see the town in all its glory, don’t miss this Friday’s Holiday Open House.

The festivities begin Friday Dec. 4 at 6 pm and run until 9 pm. For more information, contact Benicia’s Main Street Program, which puts on the event at 707-745-9791.

For the first Friday in December is one of two times a year when Benicia really shows the Bay Area why it’s such wonderful place to live.
