Gallows Humor? There’s Actually A Street In Vallejo Called “REO ALLEY”
January 18th, 2010 categories: Foreclosures / Short Sales, Vallejo
I’ll bet you didn’t know there’s a street in Vallejo Called “REO Alley“?
If you’ve ever driven around Vallejo in the vicinity of Sonoma Blvd. or Broadway St., you’ve probably passed by this tiny little alley just north of Tennessee St. many times without ever knowing the name (or perhaps without knowing it even had a name).
But in a city that’s seen its property values nosedive over the past few years due to a preponderance of REO (foreclosure) sales, it seems eerily ironic that it would have a street called REO Alley.
I actually happened upon this tiny little alley accidentally, while doing an MLS search in the vicinity. When I pulled up the street map, I saw that just a few blocks away from the property I was searching for was a street that appeared to be called “REO Alley.”
Of course, I had to zoom in to make sure my eyes weren’t fooling me. At closer look, though, Google Maps showed that the street name was really “Red” Alley, or at least that’s how it appears between Santa Clara and Sutter Sts.
But then if you moved slightly East — between Monterey & Alameda and again between Amador & Colusa — the map clearly showed it as “REO” Alley.
So of course I had to dig further.
I went to Mapquest. And there, it consistently showed the street name as REO Alley (even in the Santa Clara-to-Sutter St. area that Google had called “Red Alley”).
Next I went to the USPS web site to see if there was a street name in its database called REO Alley. And sure enough there was.
Finally, I searched the Solano County tax records database in our MLS system and actually found a property with a street address on “REO Alley” in Vallejo, CA (and no, it’s not in foreclosure).
I haven’t found a “Short Sale Parkway” or a “Loan Mod Way” yet.
But in what’s arguably the foreclosure capital of Solano County and perhaps the entire Bay Area, there indeed is an REO Alley.
Talk about irony…
