Benicia Peddler’s Fair Photo & Video Tour
August 8th, 2009 categories: Benicia, Fun Stuff, Local Stuff
A picture-perfect day greeted the throng of thousands who descended upon Benicia’s First Street for today’s Peddler’s Fair.
Below are some photos and a video I took as I strolled up and down First Street with my two daughters, son-in-law and two grandchildren. Jamie, who’s not particularly fond of huge crowds, stayed home. Read the rest of this entry »

Car Aficionados Descend On Benicia
April 26th, 2009 categories: Benicia, Fun Stuff, Local Stuff
The 16th annual Benicia Classic Car Show brought hundreds of car buffs to the Benicia Green earlier today to check out dozens of these restored beauties, their shiny finishes and brightly polished chrome glistening in the warm April sun.
Row after row of classic automobiles lined the green with others along the palm tree-lined First Street promenade and still more staged on the pier off the foot of the first street.
The annual show benefits the Benicia High Panther Band and also featured music, food and various auto-related vendor booths.
Below are some photos I took while strolling about and remembering when these marvelous machines rolled up and down the street on a daily basis. Read the rest of this entry »

Historic Steam Locomotive Rolls Through Benicia As Part Of Western Heritage Tour
April 20th, 2009 categories: Benicia, Fun Stuff, Local Stuff, Vallejo
The last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific railroad was welcomed by several hundred history buffs, train buffs and curious Benicians as it rolled through Benicia earlier today as part of a 32-day tour celebrating the 140th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike.
Benicia planning commissioner Rick Ernst organized the event and said he didn’t expect more than 50 people to attend. To his surprise, four or five times that number showed up, including Mayor Elizabeth Patterson, Vice-Mayor Tom Campbell and Councilmen Alan Schwartzman and Mike Ioakimedes.
Ernst set up an impromptu Benicia train station (a tent) in hopes that the train would make a temporary stop along its way from Roseville to Oakland — the Western-most destination on its 32-day round-trip journey from Cheyenne, WY.

Our New Year’s Gift To You…Perhaps The Only Wall Calendar You’ll Need
January 2nd, 2009 categories: Fun Stuff, Resources
Happy New Year. 2008 is history…and not a moment too soon.
Everyone has their favorite new year’s traditions and one of mine is creating a custom at-a-glance wall calendar, which I keep by my computer.
Since I keep my appointments on my computer and my Treo, I no longer need a bulky flip-style month-by-month wall calendar with scenic photos and squares large enough to record each day’s events. Instead, I use a handy one-page, at-a-glance calendar that shows the entire year and lists the major holidays. I refer to it often when I’m on the phone with someone and need nothing more than a quick visual reference.
I patterned my calendar after one I used to get every year from a now-defunct real estate disclosure company. If you’d like to print one for yourself, click on the image to the right. I hope you find it as useful as I do.
